Any YouTube video download in 2026 comes down to one of four methods, and the gap between them is wider than the search results suggest. Most of what ranks is a wall of near-identical converter sites, half of which bounce you through two redirects before showing an input box. This is the comparison we’d want to read ourselves: what each method actually costs you, and where each one breaks.

Four methods, honestly compared

Everything on the market falls into one of four buckets. They differ less in what they produce than in what they cost you — time, trust, or quality.

• Web downloaders.Paste a link into a site like NoTube, pick a format, save the file. Nothing to install, works the same on a phone as on a desktop, and there’s no app to keep updated. The only requirement is a public video link.
• Desktop apps.More power — batch queues, watch folders, scheduling — in exchange for trusting an installer. The category has a rough history: more than one once-reputable app has shipped bundled extras after an ownership change. If you go this route, download from the developer’s own site only.
• Browser extensions. Convenient until they vanish. The Chrome and Firefox stores prohibit YouTube download extensions, so the survivors live off-store, update rarely, and break every time YouTube changes its player.
• Screen recording. The method of last resort. It always works, but you pay in real time — a 40-minute video takes 40 minutes — and the result is a re-encoded copy, complete with whatever notification sounds your system made along the way.

Step by step with NoTube

1. Copy the link.On mobile, tap Share, then Copy link. On desktop, grab the URL from the address bar. Regular videos and Shorts are both fine — for a playlist, copy the individual video’s link.
2. Paste it into the downloader. Open the YouTube downloader and paste. The link is validated as you type, so a typo shows up before you hit the button, not after.
3. Pick from the list. Choosing format and quality without overthinking it

Two questions settle it. First: will you ever look at the screen? If not, take MP3 — an hour of audio weighs about 140 MB against 1.5 GB for the same hour of 1080p video. When a download fails

• Check that the video is public.Private, members-only, and age-restricted videos can’t be fetched by any web downloader — the restriction sits on YouTube’s side.
• Check the link type. A watch?v= URL is a single video and works even when it carries a list= parameter. A bare playlist?list= URL isn’t supported — open a video from the playlist and copy that link instead; our playlist downloader page explains the flow.
• Wait out fresh uploads. YouTube processes resolutions in stages, so a video published an hour ago may only offer 720p for now. The higher rungs appear once processing finishes.
• Let live streams end. An ongoing stream has no finished file to save. Once it ends and processes, the link works like any other video.
• Then simply retry. Most of what remains is transient. Paste the link again before assuming anything is broken.

A note on what’s allowed

Downloading is neither automatically fine nor automatically forbidden — it depends on whose video it is and what you do with the file.
