What is a thumbnail in YouTube?
A YouTube thumbnail is the still image shown in place of a video before anyone presses play — in search results, on the home grid, in the sidebar, inside embeds, and on a TV app. It is not a frame pulled live from the video, but a separate JPG stored on YouTube’s image CDN at a fixed, public address, which is why it can be saved at all.
Every upload gets three auto-generated frames sampled from the video. Creators with a verified account can replace those with a custom design, and YouTube asks for that design at 1280×720 in 16:9, under 2 MB. That guidance is the reason the ceiling on any thumbnail download is 1280×720 — there is simply no larger copy on the server to fetch.
One catch: change a video’s cover and the old file stops being served. Save the ones you care about while they’re live.

In the YouTube app, tap Share, then Copy link — that youtu.be link carries the same video ID as the long watch URL. In an embed, the ID is the eleven characters after v=.
How to download a YouTube thumbnail in HD
HD means maxresdefault at 1280×720, and it’s the first thing this tool tries. If that file was never generated, the download steps down to the next-widest size that exists — the filename tells you which one you got.

Where thumbnails actually live
There’s no secret API. Every cover is a plain image file at a predictable address, and this tool knows which addresses to try in which order.

- The size you’re asking for. Swap the filename to change sizes: sddefault (640×480), hqdefault (480×360), mqdefault (320×180), default (120×90).
maxresdefault isn’t guaranteed. YouTube only generates the 1280×720 file for HD uploads and custom covers — on other videos that URL returns a 404. NoTube checks first and falls back to hqdefault automatically, so you always get the largest file that actually exists.

The tool is a web page, not an app, so an old Android tablet and a locked-down work laptop handle it identically. They differ only in what happens after the file arrives. Android Chrome drops it into Downloads; iOS Safari saves to the Files app rather than the camera roll, so open the JPG there, tap Share, then Save Image. That extra hop is iOS being iOS, not a failed download.

Choosing a tool
What a thumbnail downloader should never do
Once you know the ceiling is 1280×720, the bad claims are easy to spot. A downloader promising 4K is running the 720p file through an upscaler and calling the blur a feature. The other tell is re-encoding: decode the JPG, write a new one, lose a little detail — and there’s usually a logo baked in by the end. NoTube hands over the CDN file untouched.
What’s missing matters more than the feature list. No batch mode, no channel-wide export, no saved history, no size YouTube never made. A page promising all four is inventing one. The cover is often the frame a creator worked on hardest, and plenty are commissioned designs. Downloading one takes a second; it’s what happens next that copyright cares about.
